Gardening is a technical spare-time activity that beginners find daunting at the start. Most of them find themselves unable to immerse themselves fully on their work for lack of gardening know-how. In order to get them up to speed for the task ahead, they need to read gardening books written for beginners.

First, decide what plants you will be growing. The main types to choose from are herb, vegetable, and flower gardens which are covered in most organic gardening materials. You can try to grow one type or all at once, but you’d do well if you keep it simple at the start.

Go to your local bookstore and browse for books in the gardening section. You can also find basic books on gardening in health food shops and garden supply stores. Take down the titles and authors of books of particular interest to you and note down the topics that can be of help to you. Jot down the book prices as well in case you need to purchase them at a later time.

The internet provides a plethora of online books on gardening. Start by typing the words “organic gardening” on your search engine and it will immediately point you to thousands of websites on the subject.

Compare gardening books online with those you browsed through at the store. If a title is both available in the store and online, determine which is the cheapest to obtain. Ordering online may seem cheaper as it can save you time and petrol traveling to the bookstore and back. However, watch out for the shipping and handling charges of online orders as this can bring the book’s price higher as compared to just getting it from your local bookstore.

If you want to start with the basics, you can purchase the book “Gardening for Dummies”. While there are a lot of information to satisfy the needs of novice gardeners, the book also covers advanced topics even for seasoned gardeners such as pest control, propagating and pruning.

You would also want to own Whitney Cranshew’s Garden Insects of North America which is a 600-page comprehensive and fully-illustrated guide to garden bugs. This book is also available in paperback edition.

If you are really serious about vegetable gardening, then Edward G. Smith’s The Vegetable Gardeners Bible is for you. This is one book every vegetable gardener shouldn’t be without.

The best gardening books, however, are no match to the first-hand knowledge you can gain from a professional and experienced gardener. Strive, if you can, to get the best from both worlds.
