Stethoscopes for Diagnosis and Heartbeat Listening

StethoscopeStethoscopes are tools that allow physicians to listen to the sounds of the internal organs of the body. It can be used effectively to listen to patients’ heart sounds, breathing, blood flow and other internal sounds to determine if there is any abnormality.

Brief History of Stethoscopes

The first stethoscope was invented by a French doctor named Dr. Rene-Theophile-Hyancinthe Laennec in 1816. He used a hollow wooden tube to examine and listen to the heartbeat of his female patients. He found it easier to listen to the sounds of their chest without his head touching them. He discovered that the wooden tube amplified the sound of the heartbeat. It makes it easier to hear any anomalies. He named his invention stethoscope from the Greek words (stethos) for chest and the verb (scopeein) to examine. Its design remained as is until Dr. Sprague and Mauriceau-Smellie-Veit Rapapport in 1940s investigated the principles behind the use of stethoscope and created the basic model that is being used until now. Nowadays, the designs of stethoscopes have greatly improved in quality.

Uses of a Stethoscope

Nowadays, stethoscopes are used primarily to listen to heartbeats. It is placed against a person’s chest. It has two earpieces connected to a double-sided piece. It has a flat plastic diaphragm on one side that magnifies sounds. The other side is called the bell, a hollow cup that transmits the sound of the skin vibrating towards the ears. The diaphragm is good for hearing sounds at high frequency, while the bell picks up lower frequency sounds. Using the stethoscope, a doctor can hear abnormalities of the heart and many other abnormalities.

Stethoscopes can also be used to listen for the presence of blocked arteries or bruits, chest and breathing abnormalities. It can also be used to listen to any blockage or irregularities in the intestines. Disorders like irregular heart murmurs, aneurysms, tuberculosis, asthma, COPD, breathing difficulties, and intestinal problems could be diagnosed as early as possible using the stethoscope. This makes it easier for the doctors to provide adequate and immediate treatment before the problem gets worst.

Stethoscopes are so simple and could be used without difficulty that even nurses or you could use it at home when necessary, like for instance when you would want to get your blood pressure reading. Stethoscopes make it easier for anybody to check if there is any abnormality and to provide appropriate treatment as soon as it is needed.
