Signs and Symptoms of Drug Addiction and Abuse
Drug abuse is becoming an openly acknowledged way of life with movie stars admitting substance abuse and going in and out of rehab facilities for treatment. The rate of DUI cases has been increasing steadily for the past couple of years. It is alarming, and it is very important that before it’s too late, you must know how to help a loved one get over his drug addiction. The earlier you are aware of the problem, the earlier you would be able to take the necessary steps to help your loved one. It is not easy to accept that your child, spouse or friend is a drug user or abuser. It is necessary to consult your questions with a professional healthcare provider specializing in drug addiction.
The Dark Habit
There are a lot of people who are inclined to drug addiction. These people may not be addicted to drugs, but they could be addicted to something else. And there are people who eventually developed the habit because of unfortunate circumstances. The idea is to know what signs to look out for in order to know if your loved one is suffering from drug abuse.
Signs and Symptoms of Drug Abuse

A drug abuser loses interest in things that he normally enjoys doing. Certainly, if you are doing something illicit, you wouldn’t want to be around people who would notice that you are “high.” A drug abuser doesn’t care about anything except getting high.
A drug abuser usually exhibits unusual physical action depending on what type of drugs he used. He may seem fidgety, agitated, anxious and bothered. His eyes maybe unusually dilated. He may seem carefree and unusually happy or he may exhibit strange and consistent mannerisms, like chewing on the lips. What you should watch out for is the change in behavior.
A drug abuser typically has a change in appetite depending on the substance used. He either loses his appetite or feels insatiably hungry. A drug abuser may also exhibit changes in personal hygiene. The obsession over the substance and the constant need for the drug overpower the need for anything else.
