Nutritionist Qualifications, Registration and Certification

Woman with a notebookObesity is one of the major health problems plaguing Americans today. More people are suffering from diet-related diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorder, and osteoporosis. It is alarming how the number of obese people, children and adult continues to rise. People do not seem to know what food is right for them. It doesn’t help that there abound conflicting information on “correct diet” all over – television, magazines, internet, et cetera. It is extremely confusing and difficult to really know which diet is good and which is not. This is where a good nutritionist could greatly help.

What are Nutritionists?

Nutritionists, especially the registered or highly-qualified ones, are food specialists whose function is to study the effects food, nutrition and diet have on people’s health and overall well being. They possess the necessary skills and knowledge to determine what preventive nutrition program is good for a particular illness or disease. They are the best source for knowing what a healthy diet is and how to plan healthy meals. If you are overweight or suffering from health problems, consulting with a nutritionist would be such a great help to you. You would get an advice on what food to eat based on your health and lifestyle. A diet program would be designed specifically for you, tailored according to your needs.

The word “nutritionist” is not legally protected, but there are states which require certification before a person can represent himself as a nutritionist. You need to be very careful about trusting a particular “nutritionist.” You should make careful inquiries first before you actually consult with one and follow his advice. Always ask for the credentials.

Their Qualifications

Nutritionist qualifications vary on each state. Some states require licensure, others merely require certification or registration. Nutritionist requirements vary by State. So, before you actually heed an advice of a nutritionist, check whether your state requires that a nutritionist be certified, registered or has passed a licensure exam. This may mean a lot of difference in your decision whether to consult with him or not. Also, you could check if the nutritionist has finished a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree. This would speak volume of his knowledge; although, not necessarily his experience.

When looking at the nutritionist qualifications, do not just check his educational background. You must also check his length of practice, his experience and his affiliations. You must be very sure that you are entrusting your health to someone competent and experienced.
