Nutrition Science Degree Programs – Subjects and Requirements
Reports on life-threatening diseases are increasing everyday. The rapid growth of the number of people with diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and other diet-related diseases has become alarming. Sadly, these diseases do not just plague adults. Even children are suffering from weight problems resulting to diseases which they should not have had at such an early age. Consequently, there is an increasing health consciousness, and people are gradually recognizing the effects their diet has on their health.
The Importance of a Nutritionist
With different diet books, health shows and “nutritionists” talking about the correct diet and food combinations, it is not surprising why people are confused about which kind of diet would suit their lifestyle and physical condition. This is where an advice from a competent nutritionist would be of such great help. Almost all can greatly benefit from a nutritionist’s advice. The good thing about consulting with a nutritionist is that he knows the secret to eating a chocolate cake without gaining weight. However, to be able to give you the correct advice, he must have the necessary nutrition degree attesting to his knowledge and competency.
The Importance of Getting that Degree
By 2004, the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education has approved numerous nutrition degrees in food and nutrition. These 227 approved programs cover four-year food and nutrition courses. To earn a nutrition degree, at least 30 credits and 900-hour internship program should be completed. A high school diploma and a grade point average between 2.0 to 3.2 are required in order to be able to enroll in nutrition courses.
A nutrition degree focuses on the study of food composition and how this affects the body. This comprehensive study equips a nutritionist with the skill and knowledge on how to create a modified and personalized diet for a patient. A nutrition degree also has many types of specialization including nutrition safety, sport nutrition, geriatric nutrition, nutrition management, and dietetics. The curriculum for each course varies with the preferred specialization.
A nutrition degree includes courses with subjects like microbiology, food chemistry, processing, development, food analysis, biology, psychology, food safety, biochemistry, institution management, physiology, et cetera. Subjects like mathematics, computers, economic, marketing, statistics, and communication are part of each course.
The requirements for practicing nutritionists vary in each state. There are states that give licensure examinations and there are those that merely require certification and registration. Some states require completion of internship program while others do not. Still, it is best to look into the educational background of a nutritionist because your health might just depend on his nutrition degree.
