How to Build a Flagstone Patio, Path and Walkway
A flagstone patio can be aesthetically pleasing and can enhance the look of your yard. It’s a good way of adding a new look and different style to the landscape of your house. They can provide a good place for enjoying outdoors with your friends and family. With the addition of a walkway and a path, your backyard can turn into courtyard that is pleasing to the eyes. With some creativity and hard work you can have your own flagstone patio.
Flagstone Patio
Homeowners can also install their very own flagstone walkways in the garden which is usually overlooked by the patio. Flagstone paths can also be used in the yard. In other designs, a retaining wall is also included in walkways. You can opt to hire professionals to install them for you or do it on your own.
There are different methods of installing them. It will all depend on the base which you want to lay them on. You can lay the flagstones on sand by using a hammer to fit them into place in a level position. You can also lay them on washed gravel. You will have to dig up to 4 inches which will be filled with small stones and then the flagstones can be placed in top.
Do It Yourself
The main problem with both of these methods is that they don’t provide a permanent base. The flagstones may shift and weather conditions may present a problem. The best way is to use concrete. You may have to make a design and prepare many materials. This will take a whole day to do. Homeowners have to make their measurements in square yards. After that they have to dig 5 inches deep, in which the 2 inches will be filled with gravel. You can try out your design by placing your flagstones to make a pattern then take them out for the actual placement. You should work at 4×4 feet at a time. Pour the concrete and place the flagstone quickly. You can use a hand trowel to add more concrete or remove them from the flagstone. A 2×4 wood is used to level the flagstones. After all of them have been placed, you can use a sponge soaked in water to get the concrete off. You can also wipe the wet concrete with it to add some texture.
