Drug Rehabilitation and Drug Abuse Treatment
Drug rehabilitation is the process combining medical and psychotherapeutic treatment of dependency to psychoactive substances, which include alcohol, street drugs and prescription drugs. The purpose of drug rehabilitation is to enable the patient to cease using these substances. Drug rehabilitation aims to promote the health and life of a substance user as well as to help him avoid the legal, social, psychological, financial, and physical effects caused by drug use.
Dealing with Physical and Psychological Ramifications of Drug Addiction
Drug rehabilitation emphasizes on twofold nature of substance abuse treatment – the physical and psychological. Physical dependency treatment focuses on helping the patient deal with the severe effects of withdrawal symptoms. A patient who has been abusing alcohol, street or prescription drugs would have developed a tolerance to these substances. His brain would have steadily adapted to the substance presence that the patient would be able to function normally despite the presence of the drugs in his system. An abrupt end to the use of the drugs would lead to several harsh withdrawal symptoms that may take months to clear up.
On the other hand, psychological dependency focuses on attempting to instruct the patient on how to live a normal life, free from drug dependency or abuse. As part of the psychological treatment, patients are obliged not to associate with people who are still drug dependents or users. Patients are encouraged to pinpoint the cause of their addiction and to change their habits that would have triggered or caused the dependency.
Inpatient and Outpatient Options and Support Systems
Drug rehabilitation also offers treatment-availability options. The patient may choose to receive treatment as an inpatient through residential treatment or as an outpatient. He could also utilized support groups available locally if he wants to, extended care centers as well as sober houses.
Drug rehabilitation is essentially a part of the justice system where offenders are sometimes sentenced to drug rehabilitation rather than imprisonment. DUI offenders are sometimes required to attend AA meetings as part of the penalty. The state looks at these offenders as not essentially bad people who have done something illegal, but people who need treatment. Imprisonment will not cure the cause of the offense. Unless treated, a drug user will continue to commit the same offense over and over again.
For patients that have insurance policy covering a drug rehabilitation treatment, there are a number of drug rehab programs available that would accept insurance policy as payment. The goal is to find a drug rehab program that would assists the drug dependent to stop using or abusing drugs but to also help him find the cause of his addiction.
