It’s a fact of life. Whether we like it or not, tools are and will be expensive. Once you get to the specialized and professional-grade end of the spectrum, the tools get even pricier. They’re really an investment that you have to make because you’ll be using them for a lot of jobs in the long run. It’s just like having a car; if you really want quality, you go to the dealership, pick out a brand new car that’s within your budget, and then somehow afford it.

But like cars, tools can be purchased secondhand, too. Pre-owned tools or used tools have been mainstays on eBay for a long time and even brick and mortar pre-owned tool shops are on the rise as well. Getting secondhand or used tools will really save you a lot of money as long as you know what you’re looking for and how to look for it.

Looking on the ‘Net

The internet is a great place to find used tools. eBay has an entire section dedicated to tools, and many users there do sell and even specialize in selling secondhand stuff. The great thing about buying used tools on eBay is that security and buyer satisfaction is a priority of many in the trading community. Thus, any reputable seller you find will be willing to give you an entire range of payment and shipping options to suit your preferences. You also won’t find yourself guessing about what you’re buying because eBay sellers are very often well-stocked with photographs and specification sheets.

Aside from eBay, there are some online retailers in the United States (and even some other places in North America) that specialize in buying and selling pre-owned or used tools. Just do a quick Google search, and you’re sure to find at least a couple of them. Many of those sellers buy used tools from craftsmen who are retiring or are replacing their tools. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that you’ll be able to find a lot of unique pieces with pre-owned tool retailers. Professional-grade tools are plenty, and you can even find some unique ones like handmade or vintage tool kits. If you think the seller’s reputable and you’ve got several dollars to spare, give it a try. You won’t even need to get out of your seat.

Shopping Around

You can also do your own shopping around for your first (or next) set of pre-owned or used tools. Garage sales are usually a great place to start if you’re looking for pre-owned anything, and that includes tools. There are many homeowners out there who are selling entire toolboxes because they’re moving or because they’ve got spares. Take advantage of the opportunity because many such homeowners are selling pre-owned (and, very often, barely used) tools at great prices, even as low as 40% of the original retail price. Drive around and look for announcements for garage sales, or just pay a visit to the nearest flea market. You’ll never know what you might find.

If you’re not comfortable with the idea of bargain hunting at garage sales and flea markets, there’s still hope. ReTool, a chain of retailers specializing in pre-owned tools, already has several brick and mortar stores across Detroit, Minneapolis and Texas. ReTool’s staff can help you pick out the right tool that you need for the job, and just like any other store, you can test your new discovery before purchasing it. Because ReTool offers such used tools at less than half the original price, you’ll feel like you just struck tool gold.

tools are expensive. Good tools are even more expensive. That much is clear, even to someone who’s new to shopping for tools. If you’re going to need a pricey and very specialized tool for just a couple of jobs, it really wouldn’t make sense to spend a couple of hundred dollars for something that you’ll use a few times and then store indefinitely. Fortunately, there’s a solution around this cost dilemma – tools for rent.

Tools for Rent – An Established Business

As strange as it might sound, tool rental actually makes sense. Tools are practically investments by themselves. They’re built to last. You shop around for the best quality items, and there are trusted brands that everyone will swear by. In a nutshell, it’s very similar to renting a car. Each unit is very expensive, so it’d be more practical to just rent one if you’ll just use it in the short term.

Many businesses already have or specialize in tools for rent. Hardware retailer Home Depot announced that it was starting a tool rental arm in 2002 with an initial distribution of 500 stores around the country. Scotty’s, a big name for hardware and home renovation supplies in Florida, also came up with their own tool rental service for interested customers. In recent years, tools for rent have become an increasingly good alternative instead of buying a tool that’ll only be used occasionally.

When and How to Rent Tools

Before you go out and just rent every tool you can think of using for your next project, consider a few things first. Are you likely to redo or modify the project once it’s been done? If you are, then you might have to actually buy the tool itself just to have it handy when you do need it. Will your project need regular maintenance over the span of a few years? If you think it will, buy the tools you’ll need for maintaining what you plan to do. And if you’re going to use common tools like hammers and screwdrivers, don’t even bother renting. You’ll use those for several dozen other tasks, so you might as well purchase them for yourself. The most critical factor for renting would, of course, be the price. If it’s cheaper to just buy it, the choice of buying it over renting it should be obvious.

Once you’ve considered the needs of your project and listed down what tools you’ll need for it, the first thing you should do is canvass for the tools you’ll rent. That shouldn’t prove to be too much of a challenge, given all the commercial options available out there. Different companies have different bases (by hour, day, week or even month) for charging you for tool rentals, so you should look for one that’ll give you an arrangement appropriate to your needs and project. Getting several tools from several rental providers might come out cheaper, but it could also prove inconvenient because you’ll have to return each and every one of them once you’re done with your project. Getting all your tools from anywhere from one to three different companies should ensure that you’re getting the best prices while at the same time sparing yourself the hassle of keeping track of all those rental companies.

If you don’t really need the tools beyond the project, renting instead of buying them is a more cost effective way of getting your project done.

When it comes to power tools, Makita tools is one of the first brand names that you’ll hear thrown into the conversation. Makita is one of the industry leaders in tool and hardware manufacturing and produces some of the United States’ top-rated tool and hardware products. They specialize in cordless drills and screwdrivers, but they carry a very comprehensive line of power tools and hardware that can be used to execute innumerable tasks. The Anjo, Japan-based company has almost a century’s worth of experience in the business behind it, and it doesn’t look like they’re planning to stop anytime soon after their centenary.

A Pioneer in Many Respects

It should come as no wonder that Makita is an industry leader when it comes to cordless and battery-powered tools. They were, after all, one of the pioneers of lithium-ion (also noted as Li-ion) technology in batteries, which was a significant improvement over the previous generation of rechargeable batteries, which had nickel metal hydride cells. This advantage carried them into the next generation of power tools and into the front row of competitors in the power tool and hardware manufacturing race.

Another reason for their advantage in the power tool manufacturing industry was the fact that they were one of the first to design, create and develop a working and fully functional cordless drill, which is now seen as a standard item to be carried by tool and hardware manufacturers. They also gave considerable contributions to the development of the processes and components that are used in the manufacture of modern-day drills and some critical parts of other power tools.

Confidence in Makita Tools

If anything, Makita is a company that has a lot of confidence in its products. Even by the competitive market standards of the United States, Makita tools offer an outstanding warranty and quality guarantee. Makita tools carry up to three years’ worth of warranty on them. Should the power tool malfunction or show a defect within the warranty period, Makita will happily service and repair the item for you at any one of its hundreds of service centers across the United States. Certified Makita repair services are widely available and are very efficient, promising a diagnosis within 48 hours. It’s obvious that Makita took every possible measure to make the customer confident in his or her purchase.

Tailored for the Customer

Anything a customer could possibly need for any conceivable project is most probably carried by Makita’s comprehensive tool catalogue. Makita is widely regarded as having one of the most complete lines of tools and equipment in the entire tool and hardware industry. With almost a century’s worth of experience and pioneering technology in their field, it’s not a far off conclusion to say that Makita deserves its slot as an industry leader and an authority when it comes to power tool technology. Coupled with their remarkable quality guarantees and warranty terms, Makita has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the tool and hardware manufacturing industry.

Any customer would find the choice of Makita tools as obvious. Makita offers a wide variety of tools at affordable prices (doing so is part of their corporate mission, anyway) with great customer support (customer can call their toll-free number for any inquiries) and a great equipment servicing system with some of the fastest turnover times in the industry.

When it comes to tools, assurance counts for a lot. As a buyer, you will naturally consider the assurances that a particular brand or tool can give you – quality, durability or even compatibility – and the form that that assurance will take. With Dewalt, their assurance of quality and innovation comes not only from their extensive history of manufacturing tools in the United States but also their apparent commitment to making better and more efficient tools. This article will cover some of the reasons why Americans buy and, more importantly, trust Dewalt tools the way they do.

It’s All History

Dewalt did not actually remain unchanged from its foundation to the present. A quarter of a decade after Raymond E. DeWalt (who also invented the radial arm saw) began the company, Dewalt was purchased by American Machine & Foundry Co. Inc. in 1949, and then by Black & Decker in 1960. In 1992, Black & Decker transferred the manufacture and branding of its high-end power tools over to DeWalt, who remained a subsidiary company. Thus, part of the Dewalt assurance comes from its long history as a company, while another part of that same assurance comes from the high standards that Black & Decker maintains as a company.

Pride-Worthy Products

Dewalt is known for its products as well as it is known for the components that it puts inside those products. Dewalt are known to be one of the best when it comes to building quality and battery life, and it continually pushes that advantage by innovating and inventing new and better ways to do their batteries. Their latest series, the Nano Technology line of batteries, promises better battery life, faster charging times and less weight than ever. Dewalt batteries are also consistently rated as some of the most efficient on the market and each one uses a three-step charging process to ensure maximum charging and energy efficiency. And as if to flaunt their market leadership in that respect, they ship every cordless or battery-powered power tool with two batteries, just to make sure that every buyer of their tools will never find himself or herself without power.

Beyond Just Tools

Dewalt also understands that the modern consumer and tool user has needs that extend beyond just using the tool to finish a task or project. That’s why they’ve incorporated features such as their impressive battery life, to satisfy as many of those needs as possible in their Dewalt tools. They also offer additional devices to fulfill those needs. One such device is the Dewalt MobileLock, an add-on security system made especially for hardware, tools and heavy machinery. Realizing that many hardware buyers considered their purchases as long-term investments and that those investments must be secured, DEWALT tools aim to offer its clients products that are able to do just that.

Seasoned craftsmen and woodworkers will appreciate Dewalt’s extensive experience in the business and in the market, while consumers new to the tools and hardware market will certainly like how Dewalt tools are catering to new and expanding needs. Like many of the leaders in the field, Dewalt has business and market experience in more than just power tools. They are familiar in the business of security as well, and it is that experience that they try to give each and every customer.

For many of us, the price of just about anything is a very big factor in our purchasing decisions. In some cases, it could even be the only factor. This is clearly seen when you go out shopping for tools. Unless you’re a tool aficionado or you did some serious reading prior to going out to the hardware store, there’s a very good chance that you’ll just get the generic brand, the dollar store variety, because it’s cheap tools, period. But, as everyone’s been finding out recently, just because the tools are cheap doesn’t mean they’re good. When it comes to tools and other things which you expect to use frequently (particularly in emergencies) over a long period of time, it might just be worth it to spend a few extra bucks.

The Consequences of Cheap Tools

I hope you’ve heard of the saying “You get what you pay for,” because your tools will almost certainly give you performance that’s commensurate to what you paid for them. The cheap tools that you see being sold for just a few dollars on store shelves are very often made of cheap materials that aren’t very durable. That means plastics, cheap metals and low-quality wood were used in manufacturing such products. That also means that you can’t expect such items to last very long. Although they might get the job done, you’re likelier to treat them as disposable rather than indispensable in the long run. Looking at things from a long-term perspective, you might even end up spending more buying cheap tools because you’ll have to repurchase the same tool more frequently.

Another problem with substandard and cheap tools is the risk of using them. There are innumerable tasks and situations where the tools being used are critical. The failure of a hammer, screwdriver, clamp, wrench or even ladder at the wrong time could cause damage and serious injury. With substandard and cheap tools, you know they’re going to fail you sooner or later. You just don’t know when. Until they do fail, you’re at risk of their malfunctioning at the wrong moment.

Faux Brands, Real Cheap

Just because the tool you’re considering has a brand doesn’t mean it’s a good tool either. It’s very probable that the makers of the substandard and cheap tools already learned a few tricks by now and have placed a name and a brand on their low-quality products. A name though doesn’t do anything to improve the quality of a tool. All it does is lure you into a false sense of confidence in the quality of the tool you’re buying. If you don’t know the brand and it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Fake branded items are on the rise, too. They actually became a news item several years ago because things began getting out of hand. Fake tools look very similar to the expensive, branded professional tools that you see in tool displays in hardware shops. Their quality though is very different, and that’s what allows the wholesaler or the retailer to really lower the prices. When you’re buying tools, especially professional-grade ones, always buy from a trusted retailer (a couple of big names should be in your town) and keep in mind that, every once in a while, it’s really necessary for you to pay a little extra for quality.
