Equine nutrition simply refers to the proper nutrition for donkeys, ponies, horses, mules, and other equines. Proper nutrition is crucial to the proper care and health of equines, especially horses. The horse anatomy is akin to humans in the way that they, too, have only one stomach. They, however, must consume plant fibers. Horses have simple eating habits. They love to munch on grasses bit by bit throughout the day. Nowadays, however, horses are being fed twice a day as it is not practical to leave them out on pasture for the whole day. Still, it is important to remember the nature of horses, how they should be fed, and how to take care of their diet.

The Digestive System of Horses

The horse’s digestive system is especially sensitive. Horses cannot vomit or regurgitate food. So, if they ingest something poisonous or if they overeat, they cannot vomit the matter, making them more prone to colic which causes death. Therefore, it is very important that if you have a horse, you should be very careful about their diet. Make sure their food is not spoiled and that it is free from toxins and molds. If you are not really sure about what your horses should eat or how to take care of your horses’ diet, an equine nutritionist would be such a great help to you.

The Equine Nutritionist

An equine nutritionist is a food specialist for horses. They work for horse owners and horse feed manufacturers. Their job primarily consists of studying the diet, feeding process and nutrition problems of horses. They design diet programs, setting goals, preferences, prohibitions, management, and assessment. An equine nutritionist is a big help to farmers, manufacturers and dealers. He updates farm owners and manufacturers on changes and discovery in the field of equine nutrition. He solves problems concerning the nutritional needs of horses for each type of horse depending on the use of a particular house.

The work of an equine nutritionist involves a lot of traveling. It also requires that an equine nutritionists be people oriented. He must enjoy working with people and meeting new ones. He must be adept in math and computer. He must also have a background in nutrition and must be knowledgeable about horses. A degree in business would be of great help as well. The income of an equine nutritionists starts at a minimum of $25,000. This varies from one state or region to another. Majority of equine nutritionists works at feed manufacturers company as researchers. These equine nutritionists have starting salaries amounting to $40,000 commensurate of a PhD education.

Reports on life-threatening diseases are increasing everyday. The rapid growth of the number of people with diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and other diet-related diseases has become alarming. Sadly, these diseases do not just plague adults. Even children are suffering from weight problems resulting to diseases which they should not have had at such an early age. Consequently, there is an increasing health consciousness, and people are gradually recognizing the effects their diet has on their health.

The Importance of a Nutritionist

With different diet books, health shows and “nutritionists” talking about the correct diet and food combinations, it is not surprising why people are confused about which kind of diet would suit their lifestyle and physical condition. This is where an advice from a competent nutritionist would be of such great help. Almost all can greatly benefit from a nutritionist’s advice. The good thing about consulting with a nutritionist is that he knows the secret to eating a chocolate cake without gaining weight. However, to be able to give you the correct advice, he must have the necessary nutrition degree attesting to his knowledge and competency.

The Importance of Getting that Degree

By 2004, the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education has approved numerous nutrition degrees in food and nutrition. These 227 approved programs cover four-year food and nutrition courses. To earn a nutrition degree, at least 30 credits and 900-hour internship program should be completed. A high school diploma and a grade point average between 2.0 to 3.2 are required in order to be able to enroll in nutrition courses.

A nutrition degree focuses on the study of food composition and how this affects the body. This comprehensive study equips a nutritionist with the skill and knowledge on how to create a modified and personalized diet for a patient. A nutrition degree also has many types of specialization including nutrition safety, sport nutrition, geriatric nutrition, nutrition management, and dietetics. The curriculum for each course varies with the preferred specialization.

A nutrition degree includes courses with subjects like microbiology, food chemistry, processing, development, food analysis, biology, psychology, food safety, biochemistry, institution management, physiology, et cetera. Subjects like mathematics, computers, economic, marketing, statistics, and communication are part of each course.

The requirements for practicing nutritionists vary in each state. There are states that give licensure examinations and there are those that merely require certification and registration. Some states require completion of internship program while others do not. Still, it is best to look into the educational background of a nutritionist because your health might just depend on his nutrition degree.

You may love your sport and you may spend hours training everyday, but if you don’t have the right sports nutrition, you would fail in your endeavor. Sports nutrition plays a vital role in an athlete’s level of performance and ultimately in his success. An athlete’s nutrition must be suitable to his needs and purpose. Compliance with the correct sports nutrition will prepare the athlete for maximum performance and training, maintain the same and assist his body to recuperate after his performance and training. In some instances, sports nutrition is also important in preserving body weight and aesthetic.

Misconceptions in Sports Nutrition

Indeed, sports nutrition is crucial to an athlete’s training. Unfortunately, most athletes are misinformed about the kind of nutrition they need for maximum level of performance. Some equates the quantity of food to their performance. Unaware to the risks to their health and performance, they focus on increasing calorie intake and fat mass. Admittedly, athletes need extra calories especially during training, but most athletes consume more calories than they actually need. The extra calories are merely converted into fat, and this is not productive and does not boost their performance. Instead of becoming stronger and faster, they turn slow and tired.

Importance of Sports Nutrition

Sports nutrition basically focuses on two things – hydration and balanced diet. An athlete’s body can create enough energy for major performance if there is enough hydration and proper nutrients. If you are an athlete, proper sports nutrition will increase your strength and endurance. Your diet must be appropriate for your size, physical condition and age as well as the type of sports or exercise that you are involved in. It is best if you could get medical advice on proper sports nutrition.

It is very important for an athlete to keep himself hydrated during workouts or trainings. When you talk of sports nutrition, you talk of water. It is crucial to almost all of the body systems and processes. Sixty percent of your weight is made up of water. When you lose water during workouts, it takes a huge toll on your body because your body cannot create the fluids it lost and needs for systems’ processes. That is why you need to keep replenishing lost fluids.

Your diet must be high in carbohydrates. If you have a competition or an event, it is very important to eat four hours before the competition and to drink lots of cool water three hours after your competition. It is important that you choose foods that are easily digestible and to avoid fried and fatty foods.

Holistic combines the two concepts of holism and nutrition. Nutrition is the process where the body absorbs and digests food for the growth, creation and repair of body tissues. It also refers to the study of the effect of diet to a person’s wellbeing and health. On the other hand, holism theorizes that the basic principle of the universe is the evolutionary creation of the most compound forms of life from a mere atom or cell. Applied to medicine, it is the belief that the treatment of a person is not limited to the treatment of the body, but extends to the treatment of the psyche as well.

Holistic Nutrition

Holistic nutrition, therefore, focuses not only on the diet of a person but also on his lifestyle and supplements. It gives emphasis on prevention and treatment of diseases through non-toxic and natural remedies. Holistic nutrition plays a crucial role in holistic medicine. The concept is that a correct non-toxic and all natural diet plus a healthy lifestyle equals health. Holistic nutrition goes hand in hand with macrobiotic philosophy that adheres to the thought that by eating cereal grains, man develops his intellect. There is an emphasis to the belief that if man return to an all-natural diet consisting of grains, fruit, vegetables, and natural animal products, he can regain his health.

The Principles of a Holistic Nutritionist

Here are the principles that a holistic nutritionist goes by:

The belief that having good health is man’s natural state.

The body is naturally capable of maintaining its self-balance and health.

An illness speaks volume of the body’s struggle to heal itself.

Being chronically ill means that the body has failed to perform its function.

A healthy natural diet must consists of foods rich in carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils, mineral, vitamins, enzymes, and water. All natural, nothing processed.

Because of the increasing number of life-threatening illnesses, people are interested in finding alternative methods of treatment as well as ways of maintaining good health. Holistic nutrition is one of the increasingly popular thoughts today. More and more people are adhering to holistic nutrition as an alternative health standard. In holistic nutrition, food is believed to be deliberately used or consumed in order to fight off diseases. Different aspects like quality of the food, people’s preferences, availability, habits, and presentation play vital roles in the impact of food to people’s health. The better and the more natural the quality of the food, the better is the body’s ability and chance to repair tissues.

A nutritionist’s work is not simple. As a health specialist, his approach to nutrition must be scientific in a manner that aims to study preventive nutrition. The nutritionist works with a patient to create a diet program intended to fill nutrient deficiencies resulting to or related to diseases. He also studies the use of nutrition in order to boost response against human diseases. If you have issues concerning your health related to nutrition, the nutritionist is the best healthcare specialist to ask an advice or counsel from.

Nutritionist

The term nutritionist may or may not refer to a healthcare nutrition specialist who knows the value of medical or clinical value of the term “proper diet.” You could be actually talking to a person who has no real knowledge about nutrition as nutritionists have varying degrees of education.

There are many people who call themselves nutritionists and write books on “diet.” A good nutritionist knows how to integrate and apply medical and scientific information, knowledge and facts in order to develop an understanding of proper nutrition and the effects of nutrition and food to your health and wellbeing. The term nutritionist, however, has no legal value. It is not protected by law, and no license is required for one to be able to call himself a nutritionist. In contrast to the word “dietician,” which is legally protected.

In the United States, if you want to pursue a course in nutrition, there are various options that you could choose from. These courses could last for several days, to weeks, to years. A person calling himself a nutritionist may actually have a Nutrition degree in a University or he could have had his training in a local vocational school for a couple of months.

Two Types of Nutritionists

There are two types of nutritionist – the nutrition scientist and the public health nutritionist. A nutritionist scientist is an individual who specializes in the study of nutrients, food and human nutrition. He aims to expand and apply further knowledge relating to nutrition. Usually, a nutrition scientist has training in nutrition as well as related field like agriculture, microbiology, toxicology, cell biology, biochemistry, epidemiology, or food science.

On the other hand, a public health nutritionist is an individual who specializes in the study of social nutrition problems and their solutions. An example of this is the public health nutrition. He may study the use of food in order to prevent diseases related to nutrition like goiter, rickets and other nutrition-deficiency diseases.

A nutritionist is a food and health specialist who studies the effect food has on the body and its overall impact to a person’s wellbeing. There are a lot of nutritionists who are either licensed or not although there are those who are not licensed but are certified or registered. It depends on what the law of the state requires from them. The work of nutritionists is in essence the same as that of dietitians. The competition, therefore, for jobs and vacancies are not limited to nutritionists only but includes dietitians as well.

Nutritionist Vacancies

However, are there nutritionist vacancies? Is there a promise to this kind of job? Most nutritionist vacancies can be found in hospitals, healthcare facilities like nursing homes, and offices of physicians or group of physicians. There are various kinds of nutritionist vacancies in various offices. The primary duty of nutritionist is to plan the diet program and supervise compliance with this program. The program focuses on the treatment and prevention of diseases through proper diet. Also, these jobs involve counseling patients as to what kind of diet is appropriate for them; for example, lesser salt intake for people with hypertension or less sugar intake for people with diabetes.

Nutritionist vacancies are found all over the whole food service and health networks such as hospitals and schools. In schools, nutritionist duties consist of creating programs to promote healthy eating habits. However, the major nutritionist vacancies include positions like clinical nutritionist, community nutritionist, management nutritionist, and consultant nutritionist.

Increasing Demand

There is a great promise that there will be more demand for food specialists, and more nutritionist vacancies will open either in private or government service. In 2004, there were estimated nutritionist vacancies of 50,000, most of which were filled easily. Most of these vacancies were in hospitals, healthcare facilities and outpatient facilities. There were also government nutritionist vacancies for correctional facilities and health offices. There were vacancies in the food service industry as well as establishments that provide food service like colleges, airlines and cafeterias. There were also a lot of nutritionist vacancies in family and home healthcare. It is expected that more nutritionist vacancies will open as people become more aware of the value of their diet to their health. It is also expected that, as more people grow old, the corresponding demand for nutritionist will also increase. There will be more nutritionist vacancies in hospitals, schools, residential healthcare, and others.

Obesity is one of the major health problems plaguing Americans today. More people are suffering from diet-related diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorder, and osteoporosis. It is alarming how the number of obese people, children and adult continues to rise. People do not seem to know what food is right for them. It doesn’t help that there abound conflicting information on “correct diet” all over – television, magazines, internet, et cetera. It is extremely confusing and difficult to really know which diet is good and which is not. This is where a good nutritionist could greatly help.

What are Nutritionists?

Nutritionists, especially the registered or highly-qualified ones, are food specialists whose function is to study the effects food, nutrition and diet have on people’s health and overall well being. They possess the necessary skills and knowledge to determine what preventive nutrition program is good for a particular illness or disease. They are the best source for knowing what a healthy diet is and how to plan healthy meals. If you are overweight or suffering from health problems, consulting with a nutritionist would be such a great help to you. You would get an advice on what food to eat based on your health and lifestyle. A diet program would be designed specifically for you, tailored according to your needs.

The word “nutritionist” is not legally protected, but there are states which require certification before a person can represent himself as a nutritionist. You need to be very careful about trusting a particular “nutritionist.” You should make careful inquiries first before you actually consult with one and follow his advice. Always ask for the credentials.

Their Qualifications

Nutritionist qualifications vary on each state. Some states require licensure, others merely require certification or registration. Nutritionist requirements vary by State. So, before you actually heed an advice of a nutritionist, check whether your state requires that a nutritionist be certified, registered or has passed a licensure exam. This may mean a lot of difference in your decision whether to consult with him or not. Also, you could check if the nutritionist has finished a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree. This would speak volume of his knowledge; although, not necessarily his experience.

When looking at the nutritionist qualifications, do not just check his educational background. You must also check his length of practice, his experience and his affiliations. You must be very sure that you are entrusting your health to someone competent and experienced.

There is an alarming increase in the number of life-threatening diseases which are related to improper or bad diet. Nowadays, there is a marked health consciousness. The role of a nutritionist’s in health has never been as important. Although anyone can still call himself a nutritionist without having taken nutritionists courses, there is an increasing government awareness about the need to require training, testing requirements and even bachelor’s degree in nutrition before a person can call himself a “nutritionist”. Nowadays, there are states that require training and formal internship after finishing nutritionist courses before a “nutritionist” could legally practice the profession.

Pursuing a Career as a Nutritionist

If you want to pursue a career in science nutrition, do not just present yourself as a nutritionist if you don’t have a nutrition degree. You would want to be fully equipped with your diploma, training, skill, and knowledge. Remember that you are not competing against nutritionists only but also against registered dietitians, most of whom possess a master’s or doctorate degree.

Nowadays, there are numerous schools, colleges, and universities offering various nutritionist courses for every nutrition degree. You could get a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Science or doctorate degrees in nutrition sciences or studies. After your completion of all nutritionist courses for your degree, these schools could provide you with the necessary professional certification.

Nutritionist courses mainly give particular focus on the chemical and biological makeup of food and the corresponding impact to the body and health, the integration of proper diet to a healthy lifestyle, the correct nutrition for diet-related illnesses or diseases, and modification of diet for overall well being. Nutrition education gives emphasis on maintaining health and building energy through proper diet. The courses will teach you the impact proper nutrition has on lifecycles, drugs, health, diseases, and habits. You will be equipped with the skills on nutrition counseling and treatment of eating disorders.

Nutritionist courses include food chemistry, processing, analysis, development, microbiology, safety, lab study, biology, biochemistry, sociology, and psychology. They may also include subjects not related to food science like math, communication, computer, and elective subjects. Nutritionist courses comprise a four-year bachelor degree.

Continuing Education

After a course, you would learn how to create a personalized, modified and planned healthy diet for your clients. You would be allowed to specialize in a particular food science – dietetics, geriatric nutrition, environmental health, nutrition management, food safety, and sports nutrition. The curriculum varies for each nutritionist and specialization.
