Flagpoles have evolved through time. What started out as a wooden pole that carries the symbol of identity and honor now has different variations. There have been many forms, sizes and designs that have cropped up. There are also a number of different materials that are now being used for a flagpole such as aluminum and fiberglass. This was mainly because the good old pole that carries a flag has also advanced to be used for other purposes such as those of garden flagpoles. However, a lot of people still believe that the wooden flagpole is still the traditional way to fly a flag, especially a patriotic flag.

Uses of Wooden Flagpoles Today

Wooden flagpoles are still being widely used today, mainly because of its practicality. For one, wooden flagpoles are a lot cheaper than the metal-based ones. They are still best used for a number of ways such as:

For historic places, schools, universities and government buildings, wooden flagpole brings historic significance to the flag.

For home-based flags, wooden flagpoles add a sense of tradition. It can either be planted on the ground or nailed at the side of the walls.

For country-inspired businesses such as lodges, bed and breakfast, country restaurant, resort and the like, they still opt for a wooden flagpole as aluminum or fiberglass types are not very homey for their preferred atmosphere.

For rallies, hand-held wooden flagpoles are a cheap and easy way to flaunt the banners and flags that they use to get home a point.

For school activities such as sports or academic events, small wooden flagpoles are used to hold flaglets to cheer their team.

Maintaining Old Wooden Flagpoles

Big old wooden flagpoles are usually made of good hard wood. It can last for years, centuries even, when properly cared for. A lot of places in different countries still showcase their state or country flags in old wooden flagpoles. It’s a symbol of their love and pride for the tradition of their country. Maintenance for the flag and its flagpole is mostly always included in the priorities of these towns.

Wooden flagpoles are usually painted white so it can show off the colors of the flag that it hoists. Wood splinters should be properly sanded and cracks filled with putty and immediately painted over. It should regularly get several fresh coats of paint, varnish and a good quality sealer to keep it looking neat and clean. However, regularity would depend on the weather condition of the place.

Throughout the years, flagpoles have evolved along with flags. From the simple wood pole that carries the mark of honor, flagpoles are now being used to carry advertisement, sentiments and signals. It is not surprising that flagpoles have progressed to various designs to suit its different functions. One such kind is the telescopic flagpole.

What is a Telescopic Flagpole?

Telescopic flagpoles are used in displaying one or more flags like in a banner. It consists of at least two stiff cylindrical tubes that can be extended or retracted easily just like that of a telescope. It is used for uncomplicated installation and removal of flag or group of flags. Extension can be stopped at a certain point, and it can be locked to secure the desired height of the pole by either screws or lock clip which are integrated in the set. A telescopic flagpole, when bought, usually includes rotational flag attachment for more than one flag, a protective cap that is sometimes also ornamental at the end of the pole and a ground stake or a mounting bracket and screws. This type of flagpole does not need a rope to hoist a flag up as the flag can be attached before extending the length of the pole. This kind of flagpole is never made of wood; rather, it is almost always made up of metal.

Uses of Telescopic Flagpoles

Since the telescopic flagpole is very versatile, it has been one of the more famous flagpoles of choice. It is good for temporary or seasonal use. It is very flexible and portable that it can be carried around for various uses. Here are some of the uses of a telescopic flagpole:

In residential places, this flagpole can be planted on the ground easily. It can also be mounted on the walls outside or inside the house.

In commercial buildings, the telescopic flagpole can be mounted on the walls either outside or inside.

For occasional indoor meetings and the like, the telescopic flagpole can easily be planted or mounted where needed.

For car parades as some telescopic flagpoles also comes with car braces.

For businesses such as retail stores, it can be braced on the wall.

For sailing, it can either be braced on the wall or used with a water-filled base.

For special outdoor events such as picnics and fairs, the telescopic flagpole can either be temporarily planted or supported by a water-filled base.

Flags, as we know it today, have evolved from a stiff symbol being carried around mostly during a battle to the flexible cloth material that sways when flown. Flags have always been used for signaling and for identification. These days certain types of flag are used everyday such as in sports and at sea.

Throughout history, the world has seen hundreds of flags with different functions, and it is still steadily growing. Thus, it is no wonder that an art of studying flags, their symbols, functions and scientific principles has been established. It is called Vexillology, and its scholars are referred to as Vexillologists.

What are country flags?

During the olden days, some sort of symbol is carried and displayed by armies fighting for their land. This is to show the opposing group who they are and what they are fighting for. Later on, every land or country created their own symbol, not only for war purposes but to identify themselves. This eventually became the country’s symbol and flag.

Along with the national anthem, the most significant symbol of a country’s freedom, honor and principles is its national flag. There are some countries that have similar-looking flags such as Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen whose flags are variants of the flag of the Arab revolt. Still, there are differences that set them apart from each other.

The most popular color combinations in country flags are red, white and blue for European and western nations; red, yellow and green for African nations; red, white and black for Middle Eastern or Islamic nations.

Country Flag Protocols

Because flags have been an important symbol of identity, certain protocols haven been developed in displaying them. Some of the most important protocols in displaying flags are as follows:

National flags flown together should have the same size and the same display height.

During national flag display, the host country occupies the place of honor which is the center for odd number of flags or the far left of the observer’s view for even number of flags.

A country flag displayed with other flags should be hoisted first and lowered last.

A country flag should be flown higher or in the position of honor when displayed with other flags.

During flags in procession, that is rows consisting of a national flag with other flags, the country flag should be placed in the center or far left of observer.

A national flag, when flown upside down, signifies distress.

People have found more ways to use flagpoles than just hanging flags on. The most ingenious ways of using a flagpole must have came from gardeners. This is because the flagpole has evolved from just a straight rod to hold a piece of cloth to stylish different forms to be used in different ways in the garden. Probably the most flexible flagpoles being utilized today are those used in the garden.

What is a Garden Flagpole?

Because a lot of pole-like structures used in the garden are inspired by the traditional flagpole, they have started to be known as garden flagpoles. Although they still primarily hold flags and banners, garden flagpoles function in other ways within the garden.

Garden flagpoles are any stiff poles that are used in the garden either for utility or for decoration. They can be the traditional straight rod-like poles, curved pole or two-legged arch stand. It can have intricate carving or metal work design of flowers or anything suited for garden environment. Mostly, garden flagpoles come in several pieces that can easily be assembled at home and be planted to the ground by a pointed stake attachment. It is mostly made up of metal material that may be wrapped in plastic or pvc for protection. This protection is much needed because of adverse effects brought about by the weather and from routine maintenance of the garden.

Uses of a Garden Flagpole

A lot of homeowners, especially those with big gardens have found various uses of flagpoles. Some original designs have even appeared to satisfy not only the needed function but for the aesthetic purposes as well. Here are some of the various ways to make flagpole useful in the garden:

A traditional flagpole can be braced onto the wall of the house or planted to the ground to hang patriotic flag in.

Flags or banners that welcome different seasons or different occasion such as Christmas, Halloween or Thanksgiving can be hung on a vertical-hanging flagpole placed in front of the house, near the door or anywhere in the front garden.

T-shaped or vertical hanging flagpole can carry a welcome message for the guests that can be changed whenever the homeowner wishes. Family crests can also adorn vertical flagpoles.

Curves at the end of a T-shaped flagpole can carry hanging or potted plants to add height and dimension to the garden.

Flagpoles can hold bird feeders that attract different kinds of homing birds in the garden.

Sometimes, flagpoles in the garden are used to guide creeping plants such as vines.

Flags have been used for centuries for signaling or identification. It has been utilized in a lot of different ways such as to convey a message, to advertise something or simply to decorate. It is not clear how flags started or who started them. However, it was believed that flags were invented during the time of the Roman Legions when the symbol of a troop such as an eagle would be placed on a pole and be carried to the battle. Soon, military groups are using cloth with the symbol to give the impression of movement.

Kinds and Uses of Custom Flags

There are a lot of different kinds of flags. There are the national flags which symbolize the country, war flags which are flown by some nation’s armed forces in times of war, maritime flags which are crucial in sea voyage, organization flags which symbolize the group and their mission, religious flags, and a lot of other custom flags.

Being the symbol of identity, custom flags are currently being used by a variety of groups and individuals such as simple flags like stick flags are used for cheering at sports games, car flags used for different intents, and ornate flags such as those of universities and other big or exclusive organizations. A custom flag is a free way to give something or somebody an identity that can be remembered through time.

Making Custom Flags

There are professionals who create or conceptualize flags for whatever intent or purpose. However, anyone can personally design their own custom-made flag. In designing a custom flag, one should take important note of the color scheme. A dark design on a dark background may not give favorable results while half tones may not bring out exact look from paper when printed onto the cloth. Simple custom flags with one solid color and small size can easily be made at home, while those with ornate designs are best made by professional custom flag makers.

There are a lot of companies that specialize in making custom flags that also include flagpoles and bases. It is important to inform the maker the exact use of the flag, how and when it will be flown, the size of the flag, how often it will be used, and whether it is for outdoor or indoor use. Custom flag makers can give information as to what material is best adopted which is dependent on the type and use of the flag.

Flags have become the most popular way of establishing identity, not only for countries but for organizations as well. But they are also being used for signaling such as with marines or in sports. Although flags today can be used as symbols to identify a team or a nation through patches worn in uniforms and even icons on videos, still the most honorable way to display the flag is by flying it in the air through a flagpole. This is not just because it is the traditional way, but because it is the best way that a flag commands respect and admiration that it deserves.

What is a Flagpole?

Flagpole or flagstaff is the flag support made up of wood, aluminum, steel, or fiberglass. Most flagpoles being used today are made up of either aluminum or steel as it is sturdier and last longer than wood, especially for extended flag display. Its height may vary depending on how high the flag is to be raised. Flagpoles can be made in one piece or in multiple sections that can be extended when the need arises.

The typical parts of a flagpole are the cord that ties the flag to the pole, a pulley at the top of the pole that helps raise the flag, a “truck” at the top of the pole that originally kept a wooden pole from splitting but is more recently considered to be more of a decorative accessory. The support structure depends on the height of the flagpole, its weight and the size and heaviness of the flag. Some countries have established specifications in designing metal flagpoles for safety purposes.

Flagpole Maintenance

Flagpole materials are usually chosen based on the geographical location and atmospheric condition of where the flag will be raised and, of course, on aesthetics. However, it is wise to always remember to consider the environment where it will be used as it will most likely decide the life span of the pole. Flagpoles that are to be used near the sea, for example, should be made of a material that will not easily corrode with saltwater. Flagpoles need to be properly taken care of for it to last.

The maintenance of a flagpole will depend on its make. Here are some tips in flagpole maintenance:

Wood – must be regularly checked for splinters and painted especially in harsh environments.

Steel – occasionally wash it down and repaint it. Signs of rust must be wire-bushed down immediately when noticed.

Aluminum – occasionally wash it down and repaint it.

Fiberglass – regular washing down and inspection of the supporting steel works.
