Those with no knowledge about bicycles would think that a plain, conventional bicycle is the best choice. They would prefer the ones with the shiny handles and no mudguards than the ones with mudguards and other accessories but without the shine. That is the wrong impression since those extra parts actually mean comfort and protection both for the rider and the bicycle itself.

Still, most people will opt to go for hybrid bikes. In bikes, hybrid bikes are just like crossbreeding in dogs. It is impossible to sell a puppy with a pitbull and shih tzu in its blood line. Most breeders will vouch for a full-blooded puppy, and it sells for a higher price.

In bicycles, hybrid bikes are bicycles that are sold with just frame and wheels. There are no accessories that are essential for everyday use, such as mudguards, carrier, and lights. These parts are important since mudguards help keep a rider’s clothes clean, which is vital if he is riding to work. Carriers are also significant as this will help the rider be more comfortable by allowing him a place to store his bags and goods, freeing his shoulders from the tension of carrying a backpack through the humps.

The Reason for Selling Bare Bikes

Bare bikes are offered at cheaper prices than those that come with all the necessary parts. Also, these bicycles look lighter and more lustrous, which captures the buyer’s eyes. Most first time bike buyers will prefer a shiny bike than a bike that is covered with what they think is “unnecessary junk.”

The reason why these bikes are sold without the other parts is because the manufacturers will make more profit. There is less hassle for them to sell bare bikes because they attract new customers and will give them more money for selling parts that should be in the bicycle as accessories.

In the long run though, the biker will suffer for this cheap trill. The time will come that the rider will realize he needs those parts in order to maximize his bicycle, and so he will buy what he thought were additional parts. However, there is a risk involved. By purchasing parts, the rider can never be sure if it is the right one for his bike. There are sellers who are only after profit and will say that the certain part is used for a certain bike, and if a wrong part is sold to the wrong bike, then the danger would fall on the rider. It would be safer to have the accessories already attached on the bike when purchased and included under the warranty than to have to search the parts himself.

Trekking Bikes

Now trekking bikes are available, and this will make those who purchased hybrid bikes have an easier time. With a trekking bike, it uses the same tires, brakes, gears, and features the same relaxed upright position like the traditional bicycle does. The only difference on this hybrid bike is that the handle may be straight like a mountain bike, (if that part is taken from a mountain bike), or a butterfly-shaped handlebar is attached. The butterfly-shaped handlebar will provide a more upright position.

With trekking bikes, the bicycle can still have its lightweight frame. Only now it is more secure and safer to use as it will feature the essential accessories and will upgrade it to an upmarket hybrid. In case the owner wants to resell his bike, then the price will go up along with the added extras. Now the bikers can bike without the risk.

Chopper bikes are a kind of bicycle that took its unique look from the Raleigh Chopper that was popular during the 70s. Chopper bikes were made even more popular by the movie Easy Rider, so it became one of the fads during that time. It was what signified as the “social standing” in kids back then. When we see chopper bikes, we are almost instantly brought back to our fond childhood memories, and this is one of the reasons why chopper bikes are still loved all over the world and are becoming popular once more.

Building Your Own Chopper Bike

You can build your own chopper bike. There are many manufacturers developing kit bikes that making your own chopper bike is no longer a farfetched idea. Purchasing kit bikes are much better than starting from scratch. Plus, they are much easier to assemble since the instructions are easier to read and to follow. Once you have assembled your chopper bike, then you can customize it to your heart’s delight, or your son’s delight, that is, if you are building it for him.

If you want a completely unique look that you will not see in the backyards of your neighbors, then why not have it custom made. There are many chopper bike designers that you can choose from, two of them are Doc Chooper and Marty Eden. You are assured of a unique look, but be prepared of the higher cost as well.

Cheap Chopper Bikes

But if ordering a kit bike or having it custom made is not an option for you, then why not look for the materials you will need in junkshops. This way, you can choose and discard anything you want to put in your chopper bike. The trick to this kind of thing though is determination and patience – determination that you will have all the pieces of the chopper bike and patience in looking for them. But once you have them on hand, nothing can limit you except your imagination. But of course, you should take care that your chopper bike will not look like you found it straight out of a junkshop (which you did, by the way). You have to clean it up and polish the metal parts to make them look new.

You can also get instructions on how to build chopper bikes from the Internet, and there are lots of them.

And Why should You Own Chopper Bikes?

Why, indeed? There are lots of reasons why you should own one. First of all, having one is fun. There is nothing like riding a custom-built bike, especially if a lot of sweats and swears have been given that project.

It is a great way to meet new people, and it is a good eye-catcher wherever you happen to drive it by. Just like a cute pet dog, somebody will always be tempted to approach you and remark on your chopper bike.

This is also a great way to show your personality. Like I have said, if you built your chopper bike yourself, then you can customize it to your heart’s content. There is no one stopping you, only your imagination. So go wild on your chopper bike. Show the world who you are. And if anybody asks you where you bought it, you can always proudly answer them, “I did it myself.”

Whenever touring a new place, the tourist always questions the area’s available public transport. Now comes the solution. The next time you travel, bring with you your mountainbikes.

Mountainbikes have tough frames and trusty brakes with lots of gears and knobby tires. It is perfect for riding off-roads and just perfect for seeing those wonderful sites the brochure promised. The riding position for this bicycle is upright, therefore making it easier for you to see where you are going and to read the street signs to make sure you are not lost. Its suspension adds comfort and increases traction on the road. However, not all mountainbikes are equipped with suspensions, so make sure you get one with a suspension.

Select from Various Types of Mountainbikes

The cross country (XC) mountainbikes are created for biking around the woods. It has a suspension but not to an extreme that makes it difficult to maneuver, and it has good gears and brakes. This is ideal if you are traveling through rough or worn-off roads.

The Free-ride mountainbikes have lots of suspension. Designed for jumps and speedy off-road traveling, it is recommended if you will want to race with your loved ones for your next location.

The downhill mountainbikes allow the bikers to pedal down a dirt road as fast as possible without falling over. It has lots of suspension (even more than what the free-ride mountainbikes have), and it has a more solid frame than the XC. Its brakes are also more powerful as you will need it in order to stop downhill.

Lastly, there are slalom and trials bikes. Both involve jumping and precision riding, so these bikes are equipped with small but strong frames. There is a bit of suspension and plenty of low gears, but the brakes are still good.

To Help You Decide

Mountainbikes are very flexible and are created for a wide range of activities, which starts at commuting and may end at traveling. There is also a huge range available so you have many selections to choose from. On the other hand, you need to add a lot of extras to maximize its use. You will need slick tires, mudguards, and lights if you intend some night sightseeing.

Buying Your Cheap Mountainbikes

If you want to buy mountainbikes online, make sure that you only buy it from a trusted auction website like eBay. There are so many fraudulent websites in the Internet that you have to be very careful in giving out your personal information like credit card numbers. One way of avoiding such an incident is to check out the website selling the mountainbikes first. You can do so by reading reviews about the site and forums.

You can also use the newspapers and magazines. Newspaper ads contain advertisements from various mountain bike sellers. Bicycle magazines also have an ad section where you can look over the items.

Another way of buying cheap mountainbikes is by buying it secondhand. There will always be great buys when it comes to secondhand bikes, you only have to know what to choose. Avoid bikes that have rusty metal on it. There are also garage sales in your neighborhood. Who knows? You might find your secondhand mountain bike there.

Traditional bikes are also called as the sit-up-and-beg bicycle. This is the trend in the United Kingdom. Instead of buying expensive cars with even more expensive gasoline, why not invest in a sturdy bicycle and get an exercise as well?

These city bikes are low-maintenance and very comfortable. Comfortable enough that many claim it is perfect for every day use. Most traditional bicycles come equipped with mudguards to protect your pants and lights in order to see where you are going as well as cute baskets or racks that you can place a purse or a shopping bag in. Its comfortable riding position is upright, giving you less chances of having an accident as the approaching vehicle can see you properly. Also, it comes with a padded and very comfortable saddle that will make you feel as if you are resting on an easy chair. The enclosed hub gears require minimum maintenance, and the enclosed chain is protected not only from road grit but also rusts, and it will also make sure your trousers do not get entangled with the chains.

Consider This

To own traditional bikes will mean you have the chance of cycling everyday to and fro work. This will help you save a lot of money from gasoline bills and also the expensive maintenance of a car. It is built to last with a minimum of fuss, and it comes ready with everything you need. You can pedal leisurely and get that exercise you need without even setting a foot inside the gym premises.

On the other hand, traditional bikes are not sporty and are heavy because of all the extras. If you are up for racing, then do not invest on this type of bicycle. But if you want to use it for your everyday life, then it is wise to buy traditional bikes.

Advantages of Owning Traditional Bikes

You can get a lot of benefits from using traditional bikes. Like stated above, it is way cheaper to maintain and a lot cheaper on your wallet when it comes to buying gasoline. With the oil price hike we are experiencing nowadays, it really is much better to use a bike if your workplace is near your home.

The second advantage traditional bikes give you is that you get to have an exercise along the way. Because of our busy and hectic schedules, we no longer have the time to exercise. With traditional bikes, you get a good cardiovascular exercise to and from your home and office. Plus, you get to see a nice view along the way.

The third advantage is that traffic is no longer a problem with you. You get to weave and out of stuck cars in traffic, so there is no reason for you to be late at work and your home anymore.

You also get to help environment. Your bike will not producing the dangerous fumes that cars do.

Disadvantages of Using Traditional Bikes

I can think of only two disadvantages of using traditional bikes to and from whatever place you want to be in. With cars, you are somehow protected from the dangerous fumes of the gasoline, but with bikes, you are not.

There is a higher risk for road accidents when you are on your bike. It can be your careless driving or the carelessness of the other driver.

Some people would like to ride bicycles to work, but they lack the necessary strength and balance needed in order to survive a trip down the road. Others would like to travel long distances but are afraid of climbing steep hills without any help. Now comes the solution with the electric bicycles.

Electric Bikes – What are They?

Electric bikes are bicycles that utilize small electric motors powered by rechargeable batteries to assist the riders. These bicycles are perfect for climbing up hills or carrying lots of baggage. However, bear in mind that the motors are designed to assist the rider and not to replace pedaling.

There are many types of electric bikes, but it usually falls under two major categories. The first is the e-bikes, which have a separate throttle on the handlebars. Think of a motorcycle. E-bikes have either the switch or a twist-grip on the handlebar like motorbikes have. You can decide how much assistance you can get from the motor. The other type would fall under Pedelecs. This one have sensors on the pedal, and it measures how much energy and effort the rider is putting and decides how much help to give the rider.

There are three ways by which a motor can drive the bike. The first is by chafing a roller along the tire. The second is by driving the chain, which is precisely what the rider does when he pedals. The third is driving a wheel directly from the hub.

As for the batteries, there are three kinds offered in the market. LeadAacid batteries are the most common as they are the cheapest. However, this battery is very heavy, and the average usage would be only up to a hundred and fifty uses, which doesn’t last very long. Another would be the Nickel Cadmium or NiCad batteries. This battery lasts for a long time, which averages up to more than a thousand uses and are essentially lighter than the Lead-Acid batteries. However, it is more expensive. Lastly will be the Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries which are lighter than NiCad batteries but only averages to 300 uses. It is impractical since NiMH batteries are more expensive than the NiCad.

Whether to Use Electric Bikes or Not

E-bikes are perfect for easy commuting. If you prefer your local errands to be easy, then this will help you carry around lots of the things you bought. It also reduces expensive gasoline use, air and noise pollution, and global warming. Also, if you haven’t exercised for a while, then E-Bikes will do you good.

However, e-bikes are generally heavier than your other average bicycles. Aside from the bicycle itself, you’ll have to bear the weight of batteries, which could be very heavy especially if you have the Lead-Acid battery. Imagine carrying it up the stairs. It will be very heavy.

Purchasing Your Electric Bikes

Buying your electric bikes is an easy thing to do. You have the Internet to aid you on this. You can easily type in the keywords in the search engine of your choice, and you will be directed to a lot of links to websites that sells electric bikes.

Another way is to brose through bicycle magazines and newspaper ads. They also have a collection of bikes to choose from.

We all know the many benefits bikes can give us. It gives us the freedom to navigate busy streets much faster. With bikes, who cares about the traffic as we can easily weave in and out of the stuck cars. Also, bikes are a great way to get a good cardiovascular exercise. Need I say more? It really is tempting to buy a bike, but if you are planning to buy one and have to work around a limited budget, then why not just buy used bikes?

Why Buy a Used Bike?

Obviously, you are going to buy a used bike because it is way cheaper than a brand new one. You can save a lot of money at the same time still have the same benefits that a brand new one could give you. So, for those who really want a bike but cannot afford to purchase a new one, then this is God’s answer to their prayers.

Where to Buy Used Bikes?

There really is no problem looking for a place where you can buy used bikes. One only has to log in to the Internet and search for websites that buys and sells used bikes, and believe me, there are a lot of them that choosing a site will give you a headache.

Another way of looking for used bikes is to look at local papers. The ad sections of your local newspaper has used as well as brand new bikes for sale. You can also look at bicycle magazines. I bet used bikes for sale are also featured in their ads section.

You can also ask your friends and acquaintances if they know of a person who is planning to sell his bike.

Choosing Your Used Bikes Wisely

Of course, with anything bought secondhand, there is the risk that what you are getting will not be in good condition. This is where one should be very vigilant about – the quality of the used bike in question.

If looking for used bikes is easy, then looking if it is still in good or even excellent working condition should not be hard as well. Here are some tips on how you can purchase wisely used bikes.

Check the body of the bike itself. In this way, you will know if the bike is being taken care of properly. If there are rusts and corrosions anywhere in the body, this is a sign that the owner neglected to take care of it.

The quickest and surefire way of checking if the used bike is in good running condition is to give it a test drive yourself.

If you are going to buy it online, make sure that the auction site is a reputable one. There are some sites that check the products they sell themselves and only post those that they think are marketable. Be very wary of illegitimate auction websites though as there are a lot of them waiting to dupe ignorant people like you. I say ignorant not innocent because, really, anybody who buys online knows to check a website first before giving out his credit card number.

Lastly, check the papers. Know if what you are buying is legitimate or not as there are some sellers selling stolen bikes.

Do you know that Moto-Cross was not always run by powerful motorcycles? Bicycle Moto Cross bikes, also known as BMX, started out just before the 1980s and became quite popular after that. Riders of BMX bikes were asked to use this small wheeled machine with one gear and do tricks to impress the judges and take home the prize and the title of winner.

BMX bikes sport a small frame with high bars. The wheels are usually 20 inch x 1.75 inch thickness, while serious competitors would prefer the 20 inch x 1-3/7 inch. Whatever the size of the wheel though, there is a preset frame size for this kind of bicycle.

Due to its small frame, BMX bikes are stronger than usual bicycles. With only one gear, it is ideal for those who do not have the time to maintain a fussy bike. Its strength is also ideal for kids as it is also available on children’s bikes with 12 inches, 14 inches, 16 inches, and 18 inches wheel sizes.

Two Sides of BMX Bikes

BMX bikes are very rigid and tough. It is recommended than the other bikes with the same price as the strength of its frame speaks in its favor. There is also less maintenance because there are less parts and individual components of the bicycle.

On the other hand, it is not made for riding long distances because it lacks the gears which can make travel easier. Also, BMX bikes are only as proficient as its handler. If the rider has weak talents, then chances are the BMX will also be useless, except, of course, for riding not performing tricks on.

Kinds of BMX Bikes

The BMX race bicycle, the original prototype of BMX, was built for the purpose of speeding around a dirt track with humps and obstacles. It was accessorized with frame pads as a measure of protection for the rider as he performs and executes tricks and maneuvers as he jumps and runs along the humps.

BMX Freestyle bicycles follow with its design to perform stunts and moves. The tires are smooth, and there is a mechanism that allows the steering handle to be swiveled to a full circle without ensnaring the cables leading to the brakes.

Freestyle bicycles can still be divided into two divisions. The first one is freestyle ramp bicycles, which have slightly longer frames than the flatland bikes. The bicycle ramps are erected in banana shape wherein the biker builds momentum between the two ramps while showing off his aerial tricks one after the other after exiting the ramp. The top of the ramps are called the half pipe. There is another ramp that is available with a singular ramp that has a lengthy run up, which is called as the quarter pipe.
The dirt jump BMX bike is similar to the race bicycle. However, this one has ramps made out of mounds to perform tricks on instead of the usual ramps where Freestyle BMX is used, and the rider is then required to cross over the ramps while performing the stunts.

Flatland type of bikes is smaller than the freestyle ramp bicycles. Instead of performing within ramps, these bikes are used to perform successive tricks without the rider’s feet touching the ground. The most well-known trick in flatland bikes is the one wherein the rider moves the bike around one wheel while doing other stunts.
