Acid Reflux Surgery and Relief
Acid reflux surgical therapy has gained lot of momentum in the previous years and many people are now opting for this method to get rid of the problem completely. With the introduction of minimal invasive surgery things have become easier for the patients and doctors too. The goal of surgical therapy is the same as that of all other initial measures, to provide relief to the patients.
The surgical therapy is measured as an option if medical therapy fails to help the patients in any way and the acid reflux symptoms still persist. Sometimes complications may develop in patients like Barrett’s esophagus, formations of ulcers, respiratory problems and even bleeding. If the patient is suffering from asthma, dry cough or sinusitis and change in lifestyle, diet and medications fail then surgery is required. Every patient cannot undergo surgery. Surgical therapy’s positive results varies from person to person.
The most common surgical procedure followed these days is Nissen fundoplication. The procedure is often done laproscopically. This is performed using minimally invasive techniques. Small incisions are done that causes less pain and less bleeding. The main aim of the surgery for acid reflux is to correct any related hernia which might exist and to create a new mechanism to prevent reflux from happening again. The success rate of the surgery is close to 90%. Patients have felt a great deal of relief after coming out of surgery and have given it a positive feedback. The cost of performing the surgery has come down in recent years. Now one time surgery often offers more benefits than following medications for years. The side effects of surgery are minimal and they can usually be cured by using various medications.
It is generally seen that patients prefer surgical methods over long term measures, partly because the results of surgery are quick and successful.
